Flu Vaccine Availabilty

Every year parents ask if they'll be able to get a flu vaccine at an upcoming visit. It's very difficult to give firm answers, but we're trying something new this year to help parents anticipate the availability.

We'll keep you updated on how many flu vaccines we have in stock each Tuesday. The initial reports are for those with insurance that is not Medicaid. The VFC counts are separate, as explained below.

  • If we have plenty to last the week, we'll rate it as GREEN
  • If we should have enough for patients who are scheduled, it will be YELLOW.
  • If we are out or nearly out, we'll rate it as RED
  • None of these reflect upcoming flu vaccine clinics. We hold enough vaccine for the flu vaccine clinics.
Remember that these are not guarantees, but we want to be as transparent as possible. At this time we do not expect shortages of vaccine this season.

General flu vaccine information

  • We recommend everyone over 6 months of age get a flu vaccine each year. If your child is getting one for the first time, he or she will need two doses to be considered fully covered. Most infants can get at least one of these at a regularly scheduled well visit since they are seen so frequently!
  • Vaccines available:
    • Fluzone (injectable for everyone over 6 months of age)
    • FluMist (for those over 2 years)
  • Scheduled for an appointment? If your child is in the office for any scheduled appointment and in need of a flu vaccine, we'll be able to give it at that time. This can help you avoid flu vaccine clinics.
  • No flu shot only appointments. We will not schedule any visits specifically for flu vaccines during regularly scheduled hours. All vaccines will be done during office visits scheduled for other reasons or at one of our clinics. This is so we do not overburden our staff and allows us to provide the best care to everyone when they are being seen.
  • Get up to date on routine care! If your child is not up to date on well visits, now's the time to get their annual physical scheduled! A flu vaccine can be given along with any other vaccines your child needs at that visit. Patients who are not current on well visits will not be able to use our vaccine clinics. This is because we want to provide the best medical care to everyone, and a yearly visit is recommended as a standard of care. We will make exceptions for middle and high school students who are rolling their well visit timing to meet the summer sports physical requirement.
  • VFC: Patients who do not have insurance or have Medicaid will be using VFC supplied vaccines. These are separate from the vaccine supply we purchase for those with commercial insurance. The vaccines are of equal quality, the only difference is how we get the vaccine. Availability of the vaccine supplies will vary based on insurance due to this. This will be identified on the sign up. We are not allowed to "share" vaccine between VFC and private stock.
  • We're offering Drive Thru Flu Vaccine Clinics. See Flu Vaccine Clinics for details - even a video to show how the drive thru clinic will work.
    • All flu vaccine clinics will be scheduled through the portal.
    • If you do not see any openings in the portal, it means that no openings are available currently.
    • More clinics will be planned as availability arises. Please be patient!
  • When should you get a flu shot? The best time to get a flu vaccine is between now and Halloween, but if you aren't able to get it by then, don't worry! It's still okay to get it later than that. Our season usually starts in December or January.
  • Promote vaccines! When you get your flu shot, take a flu shot selfie and post with #flushotselfie to be in the cool crowd!
  • Be safe: Still wear your masks, keep your distance and wash your hands to fight ALL infections!

Please Call Ahead!

6/18/2020

One of the main ways to prevent COVID19 is physical distancing.

To help maintain physical distancing, we have stopped our walk in clinic availability until further notice but we still offer same day appointments.

We also ask that if you need to stop by the office for other reasons you call ahead so we can avoid a cluster in our waiting room.

Please call the office to schedule an appointment.

One of our nurses will talk about your child's symptoms and your family's risk factors to determine the safest time and place for your visit.

This allows us to space patients in time - walk in visits tend to cluster at certain times of the day and do not allow  us to keep common areas of our office empty.

It also allows us to recognize potential COVID19 and determine of it's safer and practical to have your child seen in our parking lot or if they should go elsewhere if we cannot meet their needs.

Everyone over 2 years of age will need to wear a mask at all times in our office. We understand if children struggle with this, but we have tips on how to get them to safely wear masks here.

For more about our COVID19 policys and procedures as well as updates on current knowlege, see our Daily COVID19 Update.

We can't keep our office safe without your help. Thank you for your patience during this pandemic!
