Medical Assistant (MA) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

General Purpose:  To be a part of our clinical nursing team by demonstrating appropriate assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.  Effectively interact with patients, providers and office staff while maintaining standards of professional nursing.  Contribute to the achievement and performance of high quality pediatric patient care.

Essential Functions
  • Meet, greet and escort patients and parents to exam room
  • Collect and document patient’s current health status and medical history from parents/ patients
  • Accurately document patient’s measurements and vital signs as appropriate
  • Ensure that all forms and immunization records are entered into the computer and available for provider
  • Accurately enter patient’s chief complaint, history of present illness, family and social history, safety and development into computer system in exam room
  • Prepare injections as ordered by provider
  • Obtain strep, urine, glucose, flu, RSV, vision, tympanogram, spirometry and oximetry tests as ordered by provider or protocol
  • Assist providers with catheterization procedures
  • Observe and document patient’s response to pertinent medications
  • Accurately perform culture testing and document results and inform provider
  • Schedule medical testing and complete required paperwork and documentation
  • Discuss with and inform parents of any medical referrals and give parents contact information
  • Clean exam rooms following patient visit
  • Call patient parent to report lab and test results, follow-up on patient progress or relay provider messages
  • Participate in special projects or studies as assigned by managing physician
  • Identify and respond to emergencies following office protocol and triage procedures for level 1 and level 2 emergencies
  • Must follow universal precautions
Non-Essential Functions:
  • Maintain a neat, clean and safe environment for patients and staff according to policy and procedure
  • Ensure that supplies and equipment necessary for patient care are stored in an organized and efficient manner; stock and inventory medical supplies and inform office manager of low inventories
  • Maintain inventory and order of immunizations keeping within par levels set by managing physician or office protocol
  • Demonstrate correct and safe techniques in the use of equipment and medical supplies
  • Follow appropriate procedure for obtaining, returning, cleaning and disposing of medical equipment and supplies
  • Ensure economical utilization of medical supplies and ensure medical equipment is maintained in a clean and safe manner
  • Assist office staff in the performance of their assignments
  • Facilitate and coordinate resolution of interdepartmental issues with Office Manager and physicians
  • Attend required continuing education and obtain required hours
  • Participate in office sponsored training programs
  • Complete miscellaneous duties as requested
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Certified as a Medical Assistant or Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Ability to use a computer for charting and other office equipment
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and medical office software applications
  • CPR and any other certification as required by Pediatric Partners, PA
  • Ability to handle emergency situations in a prompt, precise, and professional manner
  • Ability and appropriate technical skills when administering treatments and procedures in accordance with physician’s orders and policy and procedures in a timely manner
  • Consistently demonstrate ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs
  • Consistently demonstrate ability to take the initiative to make decisions without direct supervision
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all policies and procedures and ability to reference them from appropriate books and manuals
  • Compliance with infection control policies and procedures and adherence to OSHA standards to ensure a safe working environment for self and others
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory standards
Special Position Requirements:
  • Position requires great attention to detail and the highest degree of confidentiality as well as the ability to effectively communicate with others
  • Ability to organize job functions and work areas to effectively complete assignments
  • Frequently required to stand; sit; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or control; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  • Occasionally required to lift or move up to 25 pounds
  • Must be able to speak and hear to communicate effectively
  • Vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus
  • Provide  verification of appropriate immunizations as required ( i.e.: Hep B, influenza, Tdap & MMR)

  • Main office will be in our Olathe location, but will also occasionally work in our Overland Park location

Overall Expectations:

  • Welcomes and greets all patients and their families
  • Answers the phone in a polite manner using proper telephone etiquette and recording call information in the electronic medical record and sending to appropriate staff 
  • Responsible for keeping the reception area clean and organized
  • Registers new patients and updates existing patient demographics by collecting detailed patient information including personal and financial information
  • Responds to inquiries by patients and their families in a courteous manner
  • Protects patient confidentiality, making sure protected health information is secured by not leaving PHI in plain sight and logging off the computer before leaving it unattended
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Telephone etiquette
  • Comfort with basic word and excel programs, and in learning how to use electronic health records
  • Time management, multi-tasking, and organization
